LAYC Training Courses for 2026/27

This course is for youth workers, play workers and volunteers who wish to gain knowledge and experience of First Aid. This interactive course will include: Recovery position, CPR and treatment for shock, Disorders of breathing, Hypothermia, Disorders of consciousness, Wounds and bleeding, Injuries to bones and soft tissue, Burns and scalds, Poisons, Miscellaneous conditions. Certification is for 3 years and each individual receives a comprehensive handbook. Due to high demand, we only allow two members of each organisation to attend a course. This is an interactive workshop exploring what is meant by Autism, raise the awareness of how to work with a young person in a youth work setting and explore briefly other conditions that may co-occur with autism such as ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. Learning Outcomes: • Understand the ways that autistic people will express themselves in everyday life and in conversation with others. • Understanding of the autistic community and the language more commonly used within the autistic community • Understand the ways trauma presents with autistic people • How we can change our practice to better support autistic people in our groups. • Raise your awareness of other conditions that may co-occur with autism 👥 In person at LAYC Free to members. £60 non-members. These is a two day training course, both days must be attended. If you have ever witnessed play that feels full of emotion - maybe role-play with other children or play with toys on their own - sometimes leading to upset and anger, sometimes ending with the child becoming more calm, this training will help you understand what is going on in this play. You will learn how to notice the emotional content of play and feel confident in knowing whether to allow them space, or join them to support what they are exploring. This training will focus on play as children's way of thinking and communicating and build your skills in different responses that support children's emotional expression and explorations. This introductory workshop is designed to increase your understanding and raise awareness of how to manage behaviour that is challenging in a youth work setting. This interactive session will cover: • Framing the behaviour that presents as challenging, • Understanding what drives behaviour • Exploring strategies for working with behaviour that presents as challenging. • Positive strategies to support behaviour – what to say, what to do and how to be 👥 in person at LAYC Free to members. £60 non-members Due to high demand, we only allow two members of each organisation to attend a course. Who is it for? Youth workers, teachers, school nurses, and anyone working with young people with additional needs who want to better support their sexual wellbeing. It takes about an hour and covers vital topics including young people's rights, key policies, guidance, and Scottish law around relationships, sexual health, and parenthood. The Professional Development Award in Youth Work has been designed for those working with young people in a Community Learning and Development context. It is suitable for people who have experience of youth work in a paid or volunteering capacity but who might not have formal qualifications in youth work. The PDA in Youth Work offers a nationally recognised, SQA accredited qualification at SCQF Level 6.
